Outdoor Water Lines and Faucets

As a homeowner, the word “Frozen pipes” is like a nightmare. During the winter months, always expect that your plumbing system, pipes, and drains would be overloaded because you would spend more of your time inside your home and guests coming too. The ice foaming blockage in your pipe can expand and put pressure inside to cause a pipe burst. Anyhow, you can prevent disasters like that of the frozen pipe by basic plumbing tips.

The first thing you need to do is to protect all those pipes in un-insulated areas of the home and even those running along the home’s outer walls. These pipes are most likely to freeze and you should buy some foam towel to wrap them in winters.

The next thing you should do is to drain the faucet and outside portion of pipes. A valve inside the outdoor faucet will shut off the water’s flow, so close it. Afterward, Open and close the tap outside to release any water in the pipe. After that, disconnect the hose to ensure that freeze-proof faucets will drain and this would avoid any damage to the hose from freezing water.

Let Faucets drip in extreme colds

In the case of extreme colds, it’s always a good idea to let faucet drip slowly. This slow drip would allow water molecules to move; thereby reducing the chance that pipe will freeze. You can always please a bucket underneath the faucet to save it for further household usage.

Optimum home’s temperature and water heater

Although in winters, you might be tempted to turn down the heat to save energy it’s never a good idea to do such a thing. Always set your home’s temperature no lower than 45F; it would offer maximum saving and your pipes would also be protected from freezing.

Clogged Drains

During winter holidays you would be preparing some of the largest meals during the year. So you should never dispose of cooking-related messes, leftovers, and table scraps into your drain because with a lot of fats or oils it has a tendency to clog your kitchen drains.
